Shaffer Yamada, Teri (edt.), Virtual lotus: modern fiction of Southeast Asia, Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press, c2002.


It was edited by Professor Yamada. With this book, she won award of Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2002. Her book Virtual Lotus has also received several outstanding reviews. This was collections of the well-known short stories of writers through Southeast Asia during the 20th century. It can be called as anthology.

There were many short stories in it including "Thadun," of Ne Win Myint, "Clean, Clear Water," of U Win Pe, "An Umbrella," of Ma Sandar, and "An Unanswerable Question" of Daw Ohn Khin in Burma.

It provides a outline of the Southeast Asian each country's literary history including snapshots of cultures at a specific historical moment and the telling the interaction between individual writers and their socio-political situations. Many of the stories are ethnographic and provide. Reflect gender balance, diversity of style, and quality of literary expression can be read. It includes bibliographical references. It will be suitable for the Adults.
